E. M. Bounds wrote for preachers, and his argument is single: the Church is looking for better methods, but God is looking for better men. In twenty short chapters, each opening with the words of an earlier praying man, he presses the case that a sermon's power is made in the closet before it is made in the study, and that unction — which no learning, genius or eloquence can win — is bought with much prayer or not at all.
