James
Treated in 421 passages across the library.
A practical letter from James, traditionally identified as the brother of the Lord and leader of the church in Jerusalem. It teaches joy in trials, asking God for wisdom, taming the tongue and caring for the poor, and insists that "faith without works is dead." It closes with the prayer of faith, and with Elijah as an example of the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man.
Chapters
The verses these writers stop at
- 5:16 So make it your practice to confess your sins to each other and to pray for each other, so that you may be healed. When a righteous person prays, that prayer is at work, and it can do a great deal. 51
- 1:22 Be people who carry out the word, not just people who hear it. Otherwise you are fooling yourselves. 44
- 1:5 If any of you is short of wisdom, ask God, who gives to everyone with an open hand and without scolding, and it will be given to you. 32
- 1:27 To God the Father, religion that is pure and untainted looks like this: going to the help of orphans and widows in their trouble, and keeping yourself unstained by the world. 22
- 1:17 Every good act of giving and every perfect gift is from above. It comes down from the Father of the lights in the sky, in whom there is no change, and no shadow cast by turning. 21
- 4:7 So place yourselves under God. Stand against the devil, and he will run from you. 21
- 5:14 Is anyone among you ill? That person should call for the elders of the church, and they should pray over the sick person and anoint the sick person with oil in the name of the Lord. 20
- 1:6 But you must ask in faith, without wavering. Anyone who wavers is like a wave out at sea, driven by the wind and thrown this way and that. 16
