About this book

J. C. Ryle’s classic on what it means to be holy, in the enlarged 1879 edition. Writing amid the “higher life” debates of the 1870s, Ryle went back to Scripture and the Puritans to show that holiness is no sudden leap but a lifelong fight: it begins with an honest look at sin, grows through sanctification, and costs the believer something every day. Twenty plain-spoken papers follow — on the fight, the cost, growth and assurance; on Moses, Lot and Lot’s wife; on the dying thief and the storm on the lake — closing with “Christ Is All” and a set of extracts from Traill and Brooks.

He that wishes to attain right views about Christian holiness, must begin by examining the vast and solemn subject of sin. He must dig down very low if he would build high. A mistake here is most mischievous. Wrong views about holiness are generally traceable to wrong views about human corruption.
