Introduction
About this book
This is a companion to Dietrich Bonhoeffer, not a book by him. Written by Ochorus, it sets out in sixteen short chapters the teaching for which the German pastor is chiefly remembered — costly grace and the call to follow Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount taken at its word, the church as Christ present among his people, the daily disciplines of life together, the Psalms as the prayer book of the Bible, and the hard questions of responsibility, guilt and suffering that he faced in the last years of his life. It tells his life plainly, and it is honest about where readers differ from him and where his words have been bent to serve causes he never spoke for.
It is important to be clear about what this book is and is not. It is an independent work of exposition, summary and appreciation. It is not published by, affiliated with, or endorsed by any publisher or estate holding rights in the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer or their translations. All descriptions of his teaching are the present author’s own summaries; his books, lectures and letters are named only for the reader’s further study, and readers are warmly encouraged to obtain those works from their rightful publishers. Nothing of Bonhoeffer’s own text is reproduced here — only Scripture, quoted from the Authorised (King James) Version, and Ochorus’s account of what he taught.
Bonhoeffer spent his short life asking one question: who Jesus Christ really is for us, here and now, and what it means to follow him. The right response to his witness is not to admire the man who asked it, but to ask it ourselves, with the Bible open and the cost counted.
A house of music and science. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born on 4 February 1906 in Breslau, then in Germany and now the Polish city of Wrocław, the sixth of eight children; his twin sister Sabine arrived a few minutes after
