Simeon Nsibambi (1897–1978) was a Kampala health officer who had everything his society valued and could not stop being hungry for God. In September 1929 he asked a tired English missionary one question — what is missing, in me and in the church? — and the two days of Bible and prayer that followed are widely counted the spark of the East African Revival. He resigned his post, was thought mad for asking strangers about their souls, and then spent his last thirty-seven years too ill to leave his house while the movement he lit ran across five countries without him. Seven readings that tell his life in order and turn each stage of it on the reader, staying close to the little the record actually holds and saying so where it falls silent.
To understand Simeon Nsibambi you have to understand how new his church was. The first Christian missionaries reached the kingdom of Buganda in 1877, twenty years before he was born.
