Unspoken Sermons

George MacDonald called these sermons “unspoken” because they were never preached: he had lost his pulpit young, and wrote them instead, gathering them in three series in 1867, 1885 and 1889. In thirty-six meditations on the words of Jesus and the apostles he returns again and again to one conviction — that God is a Father whose love will not rest until his children are made like his Son. Here are “The Child in the Midst,” “The Consuming Fire,” “The Way,” “Abba, Father!” and “Self-Denial”: searching, tender and often startling pages, and the ones from which C. S. Lewis drew most of his anthology of the writer he called his master.
