About this book
In 1880, in years of illness and of grief for children he had lost, George MacDonald printed for his friends a book of prayer in verse: one seven-line stanza for every day of the year, with a blank page facing each for the reader's own. The old soul of the title talks honestly with God through dullness, doubt, pain and joy, asking not to be spared the strife but to be made true in it, and learning to rest in the will of a Father who is nearer than his own heart. Read a stanza a day, from the first of January to the last of December, it is one of the most searching devotional poems in English.
Sweet friends, receive my offering. You will findAgainst each worded page a white page set:—This is the mirror of each friendly mindReflecting that. In this book we are met.Make it, dear hearts, of worth to you indeed:—Let your white page be ground, my print be seed,Growing to golden ears, that faith and hope shall feed.
