About this book

What subjects should I take? Which friends should I spend time with? What should I do with my life? F. B. Meyer, a London pastor whose books sold in the millions, wrote The Secret of Guidance for people asking questions like these. This teen edition retells it in plain words: how God guides, why your motives matter, how to use your head and pray, why you sometimes have to wait, what to do when the joy has gone, how to put facts before feelings, how to hand your worries to Jesus, and how to get through sorrow. Meyer’s own sentences are kept where they say it best.

Frederick Brotherton Meyer was born in London in 1847 and grew up in a Christian home. He felt called to be a minister when he was just sixteen, went to college, and became a pastor in Liverpool and then York.

Questions and Answers

Who was F. B. Meyer?

Frederick Brotherton Meyer was an English pastor, born in London in 1847. He pastored large churches in Leicester and London, spoke at conferences on five continents, set up homes for people in need, and wrote more than seventy books that sold in the millions. He died in 1929.

How does God guide people, according to Meyer?

Through three things that agree: the Bible, the inner prompting of the Holy Spirit, and the way circumstances open up. He also says to check your motives, surrender your will, gather good information, use sanctified common sense, pray, and be willing to wait.

What if I don’t feel close to God any more?

Meyer says feelings are not a reliable test of where you stand with God. Your standing in Jesus doesn’t change with your moods. Sometimes tiredness or stress takes away joy, as with Elijah, whom God gave food and sleep. If you feel low most days, please talk to a trusted adult or a doctor.

Does God send bad things to punish me?

Meyer says firmly: don’t talk about punishment, because Jesus has taken the punishment for our sins. God can use hard times to grow us. But if someone is hurting you, that is never God’s will for you; please tell a trusted adult.

What should I do with my worries?

Meyer says to hand them deliberately to Jesus, as you once handed him your sins, and to leave them with him. If worry or anxiety is overwhelming, talk to someone you trust as well.

Is this the full text?

No. It is a retelling for teenagers in plain modern words, drawn from Meyer’s book and keeping his own sentences where they say it best. The full Secret of Guidance is also available.
