Introduction and Apology
About this book
The first series of the lectures Charles Spurgeon gave on Friday afternoons to the students of his Pastors' College at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, published in 1875 at the request of the ministers who had first heard them. He warns that they are “colloquial, familiar, full of anecdote, and often humorous,” and they are: thirteen talks on the minister's own soul, the marks of a true call, private and public prayer, the matter of sermons, choosing a text, spiritualizing, the voice, holding attention, speaking without notes, the minister's fainting fits, his ordinary conversation, and how to work with few books. Under the humour runs one conviction — that the preacher's own walk with God is his first tool, and that Christ must be all in his ministry.
EVERY workman knows the necessity of keeping his tools in a good state of repair, for “if the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength.” If the workman lose the edge from his adze, he knows that there will be a greater draught upon his energies, or his work will be badly done.
