About this book

The second series of Spurgeon's lectures to the students of the Pastors' College, published in 1877. It opens with the work of the Holy Spirit in the ministry and the need for constant progress and decision for the truth, gives two lectures to the history and practice of open-air preaching, and two — sharp and very funny — to posture, action and gesture in the pulpit. It closes with earnestness, the wisdom of having “one blind eye and one deaf ear,” and conversion as the preacher's great aim. Written, Spurgeon says, “entirely for students and beginners in preaching,” it remains a pastor's handbook full of hard-won counsel.

I have selected a topic upon which it would be difficult to say anything which has not been often said before; but as the theme is of the highest importance it is good to dwell upon it frequently, and even if we bring forth only old things and nothing more, it may be wise to put you in remembrance of them.
