About this book

R. A. Torrey wrote this little book for brand-new Christians who wanted to know how to keep going. This teen edition retells it in plain words: how to begin right, why you don’t have to keep your faith secret, how you can know you belong to God, what it means to receive the Holy Spirit, how to read the Bible and handle the hard bits, why prayer is an audience with the King, how to choose friends and fun, how to share your faith, what to do when people push back, and how to know the next step. Torrey’s own sentences are kept where they say it best.

Reuben Archer Torrey was born in 1856 in New Jersey, USA, into a wealthy family. His mother prayed for him constantly. But when he went to Yale University, he threw himself into everything his mother had prayed against: the theatre, horse racing, card games and heavy drinking.

Questions and Answers

Who was R. A. Torrey?

Reuben Archer Torrey was an American pastor, teacher and evangelist, born in 1856. After a wild time at university he came to faith, studied in Germany, and led the school that became the Moody Bible Institute. He preached around the world and wrote more than forty books, mostly on prayer and the Holy Spirit. He died in 1928.

Is this book only for new Christians?

It was written for new believers, but it is useful for anyone who wants to grow: it covers the basics that every Christian keeps coming back to.

Torrey had a very dark time at university. What happened?

As a student he lived a wild life and, one night in 1875, reached such despair that he meant to end his life. Instead he found himself praying, remembering his mother’s prayers, and gave his life to God. If you ever feel that low, please tell a trusted adult straight away or contact a crisis line. You are not alone, and help is there.

Does Torrey say Christians can’t have fun?

No. He says young people need recreation and that Jesus delights in wholesome play. He gives simple questions to help decide what is good: can I do this to God’s glory, pray about it, and take Christ with me?

What if people give me a hard time for being a Christian?

Torrey says it is common, and that you can stand firm with love. But being picked on or bullied is never something you have to put up with alone. Please tell a trusted adult.

Is this the full text?

No. It is a retelling for teenagers in plain modern words, drawn from Torrey’s book and keeping his own sentences where they say it best. The full How to Succeed in the Christian Life is also available.
