About this book
Kanzo Uchimura’s own account, drawn from his diary, of how a samurai’s son who prayed to many gods became a Christian. “I was not converted in a day,” he writes; this is the slow story of a heathen boy at the Sapporo college, the little student church he helped to found, and the years in America that brought him to Christ — set down as “the honest confessions of the various stages of the spiritual growth I have passed through.”
Now that we were baptized we felt we were new men; at least we tried to feel so, and to appear so. Within a month we were to give up the humiliating name of the “Freshies,” and with the advent of younger brothers below us, we thought we ought to behave more like men and less like children.
