About this book

Thomas Watson’s sermons on the Westminster Shorter Catechism, the first and best-loved part of his Body of Practical Divinity (1692). Beginning with man’s chief end — to glorify God and enjoy him for ever — Watson works through Scripture, the being and attributes of God, the Trinity, creation and providence, the fall, the covenant of grace, the offices of Christ, and the benefits of redemption, from faith and justification to assurance, perseverance and the resurrection. Plain, warm and endlessly quotable, it is Puritan doctrine pressed home on the heart. This edition opens with the memoir C. H. Spurgeon compiled for it, and Watson’s own Preliminary Discourse to Catechising.

Compiled by C. H. Spurgeon Thomas Watson’s Body of Practical Divinity is one of the most precious of the peerless works of the Puritans; and those best acquainted with it prize it most. Watson was one of the most concise, racy, illustrative, and suggestive of those eminent divines who made the Puritan age the Augustan period of evangelical literature.
