About this book

Written over two busy years at the start of his London ministry, the young Spurgeon's book traces the soul's growing acquaintance with Christ — from the days when “we esteemed him not,” through conviction, longing, pardon and the joy of conversion, to love, trial, the seasons when Jesus seems to hide himself, and the secret of keeping communion with him. It is meant, as its preface says, for beginners: to comfort the mourner, confirm the weak, guide the wandering and reassure the doubting.

It would not be easy for some of us to recall the hour when we first heard the name of Jesus. In very infancy that sweet sound was as familiar to our ear as the hush of lullaby. Our earliest recollections are associated with the house of God, the family altar, the Holy Bible, the sacred song, and the fervent prayer.
