Introduction: The Songs in the Middle of the Bible
About this book
Tell Me the Story is an original Ochorus storybook Bible for children aged 6 to 10. Its eight books tell the Bible’s story from creation to the new creation. Book 9, “Songs and Wise Words”, is a companion to them: it opens the books in the middle of the Bible that are not mostly stories, the Psalms, Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes.
Each chapter takes one song or one wise saying. Where the Bible gives the story behind a psalm, like David in Gath behind Psalm 56, it tells it; where a proverb needs picturing, it imagines a child today and says so. There are happy songs and sad ones, because the Psalms teach us to bring God all our feelings; the wisdom of Proverbs on work, words and friends; Job, told gently; and Ecclesiastes’ “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth”. Where the New Testament itself links a passage to Jesus, as John 10:11 does with the shepherd, a line says so.
Each chapter takes about four minutes to read aloud and ends with a prayer and three questions to talk about together, with answers for the grown-up reading along. Many chapters invite a child to learn a verse by heart. The other books are not required.
Do you remember David, the shepherd boy who became king? Before he ever fought a giant, David spent his days and nights looking after his father’s sheep on the hills around Bethlehem. David knew all about being a shepherd. He led the sheep to find grass to eat and water to drink. He protected them from lions and bears.

Questions and Answers
What is in Book 9 of Tell Me the Story?
Nineteen chapters on the Bible's songs and wise words: Psalms 23, 139, 19 and 8, 56, 46, 91, 100 and 103, 42, 150 and 1; Proverbs on wisdom, the ant, gentle words, trusting God and friendship; two chapters on Job; and two on Ecclesiastes.
Why is it a companion rather than part of the story?
The eight main books follow the Bible's story from creation to the new creation. The Psalms, Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes are mostly songs, poems and sayings, so they have a book of their own that can be read alongside the others at any time.
Does it make up stories about the Bible?
No. Where the Bible tells the story behind a psalm, the chapter tells it. Where a proverb is easier to understand with an example, the chapter imagines a child today and says clearly that it is imagining. Every verse quoted with its reference is word for word from the Berean Standard Bible.
Are there sad psalms in it?
Yes. Psalm 42 and Psalm 56 are honest songs from people who were sad or afraid, and the book explains that God put them in the Bible so that we can bring Him all our feelings. Job's story is told gently too.
Is it good for learning verses by heart?
Yes. Many chapters invite a child to learn a verse, such as "The Lord is my shepherd", "When I am afraid, I put my trust in You" and "Trust in the Lord with all your heart".
Which Bible translation does it use?
Every verse quoted with its reference is word for word from the Berean Standard Bible (BSB), which is in the public domain.
