You Made Me

“I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” — Psalm 139:14

Have you ever looked in a mirror and wondered why you look the way you do? Or why you like the things you like? Or wished you were different?

King David wrote a song about how well God knows us. It’s Psalm 139.

“O Lord, You have searched me and known me,” David sang. “You know when I sit down and when I get up. You understand my thoughts from far away. You know where I go and when I lie down. You know everything I do. Before I even say a word, You know what I’m going to say.”

God knows everything about you. Not just your name, but every single thought, every worry, every secret, every dream.

That might sound scary. But David didn’t find it scary. He found it wonderful.

“Where can I go from Your Spirit?” he sang. “Where can I run away from You? If I go up to the heavens, You are there. If I go down to the deepest place, You are there. If I fly away on the wings of the morning, and land on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me, and Your right hand will hold me tight.”

You can never go anywhere that God isn’t. You can never get lost from Him. Wherever you are, His hand is holding you.

Then David sang about how God made him.

“You made every part of me. You knit me together inside my mother. I praise You, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made! Your works are wonderful, and I know that very well. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was written in Your book before any of them had happened.”

Imagine someone knitting a jumper, stitch by stitch, choosing every colour and every pattern with care. That’s how David says God made you. Not by accident. Not carelessly. With care and love, every bit of you, inside and out.

So when you look in the mirror, or when someone says something unkind about you, remember Psalm 139. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. God made you on purpose, He knows you completely, and He loves you.

Read it in your Bible: Psalm 139:1–18

Dear God, thank you that you know me completely and love me. Thank you that you made every part of me on purpose. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Amen.

Talk about it together

Ask the questions first — then tap one for a note for grown-ups.

What does God know about us, according to Psalm 139?

Everything: when we sit and stand, what we think, where we go, and what we’re going to say before we say it.

How does David say God made him?

God knit him together inside his mother, and made him fearfully and wonderfully, with every day of his life written in God’s book.

Is there anything about yourself you sometimes wish were different? What does Psalm 139 say about you?

Let your child share. Remind them that God made them on purpose, with care and love, and that they are “fearfully and wonderfully made.”
