The Sky Is Singing

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” — Psalm 19:1

Have you ever lain on your back on a clear night and looked up at the stars? Or watched a sunrise turn the sky pink and gold? Or seen a sky full of storm clouds and lightning?

King David spent many nights outside, looking after sheep. He saw the stars every night. And he wrote songs about them.

“The heavens declare the glory of God,” David sang in Psalm 19. “The skies show what His hands have made. Day after day they speak. Night after night they tell what they know. They don’t use words. You can’t hear their voice. And yet their message goes out to the whole earth.”

The sky is like a giant painting that shows us how great and beautiful the Painter is. Without saying a single word, the sun and moon and stars tell everyone, everywhere: “Look how great God is!”

David wrote another song about the night sky. It’s Psalm 8.

“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!” David sang. “When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars that You put in their places, what is man that You think about him? What are human beings, that You care for them?”

Think about how many stars there are. More than anyone could ever count. And the universe is so huge that the light from some of them takes thousands of years to reach us.

The God who made all of that is so big. And we are so small. So why would He care about us?

But He does! David was amazed. The God who made the stars thinks about you. He cares about you. He made people to be the most special part of everything He made, even more special than the stars.

So next time you see a beautiful sky, you can say thank you to the God who painted it. And remember: the one who made all those stars knows your name.

Read it in your Bible: Psalm 19:1–6; Psalm 8

O Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Thank you for the sun and moon and stars. Thank you that you, who made them all, care about me. Amen.
