Trust with All Your Heart

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5

Have you ever been in a dark room and had to find your way out? Or walked through a forest without a path? It’s easy to get lost, or to bump into things, when you can’t see where you’re going.

One of the most loved verses in all of Proverbs is about finding our way.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,” it says, “and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” Not just a little bit. Not just when it’s easy. With all your heart.

“Lean not on your own understanding.” To lean on something means to rest your whole weight on it. If you lean on a wobbly chair, you might fall. Our own understanding is a bit like that wobbly chair. We don’t know everything. We can’t see the future. We make mistakes. So we shouldn’t put all our weight on what we think. We should lean on God, who knows everything and never makes mistakes.

“In all your ways acknowledge Him.” That means remembering God in everything we do: at school, at home, when we play, when we choose our friends, when we make decisions. Asking Him for help. Doing things His way.

“And He will make your paths straight.” When we trust God and follow Him, He will guide us. He’ll show us the way to go, like a clear, straight path through the forest.

Imagine a boy called Sam who has to decide whether to join a new club at school. He’s not sure if it’s the right thing. He could just decide on his own. Or he could pray about it, ask his parents what they think, and think about what God would want. When Sam does that, he is “acknowledging God in all his ways”. And God promises to guide him.

This doesn’t mean everything will always be easy. But it means we never have to work out life on our own. God is with us, leading the way.

Read it in your Bible: Proverbs 3:1–12

Dear God, I want to trust you with all my heart. Help me not to lean on my own understanding, but to remember you in everything I do. Please show me the way to go. Amen.

Talk about it together

Ask the questions first — then tap one for a note for grown-ups.

What does it mean to “lean not on your own understanding”?

Not to put all our trust in what we think, because we don’t know everything, but to trust God, who does.

What does God promise to do when we trust Him and acknowledge Him in everything?

He will make our paths straight, guiding us and showing us the way.

Can you learn Proverbs 3:5–6 by heart? When could it help you?

Say it together a few times. It can help when you have a decision to make or don’t know what to do.
