R. A. Torrey’s plain, Scripture-packed guide to prayer, first published in 1900 out of the revival campaigns he led around the world. Torrey shows why prayer matters so much, then works through its conditions: praying to God himself, obedience, praying in the name of Christ and according to his will, praying in the Spirit, perseverance, abiding in Christ, and thanksgiving. He names the hindrances that keep prayers unanswered, when to pray, and closes with two chapters on the place of prayer in revival — the book’s burden from first page to last.

In the 6th chapter of Ephesians in the 18th verse we read words which put the tremendous importance of prayer with startling and overwhelming force: “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”
