Introductory Remarks on the Importance of Orthodoxy

About this book
The modern world, Chesterton complains, has stopped asking whether a man's view of the universe is true; it is thought bad manners to have one at all. In these twenty essays he takes the celebrated thinkers of his day one by one, Kipling, Shaw, Wells, Moore, Whistler and the rest, and asks of each the question it is no longer polite to ask: what does he believe, and is it right? Witty, generous to his opponents and relentless with their ideas, the book argues that a man who refuses to have a creed has not escaped dogma but only hidden it, and it is the challenge to which Orthodoxy, three years later, gave his answer.
Much has been said, and said truly, of the monkish morbidity, of the hysteria which has often gone with the visions of hermits or nuns. But let us never forget that this visionary religion is, in one sense, necessarily more wholesome than our modern and reasonable morality.
