About this book

Gilberte Périer, Pascal's elder sister, wrote this life soon after his death. She tells of the boy who worked out Euclid's geometry for himself, the inventor of the calculating machine, the family's conversion at Rouen and her brother's withdrawal from the world; then she lingers over his love of poverty, his charity to the poor, his patience in sickness, and the last days when he asked that a poor sick man be brought into the house to die in his company.

My brother was born at Clermont on the 19th of June in the year 1623. My father's name was Étienne Pascal, president of the Cour des Aides; and my mother's, Antoinette Begon.
