About this book

This is not a book by R. A. Torrey. It is a companion to him — an independent work of exposition and appreciation, written by Ochorus, that gathers the heart of his teaching into eighteen short chapters for the ordinary reader, with a chapter on his life, a conclusion and a guide to his books.

Torrey’s one conviction was that God has spoken plainly and means what He says. The doubter who had once taken the Bible apart at Yale spent fifty years taking it at its word: on the Holy Spirit, who is a Person and not an influence; on the power for service that the Father promises to those who ask; on prayer, on the Scriptures, on the deity and atonement of Christ, on assurance, on the winning of souls, and on the solemn realities of judgement and the Lord’s return. This volume follows that thread, weighs honestly where he must be read with care — above all his teaching on the baptism with the Spirit as a distinct experience after conversion, and the blunt certainty of his manner — and ends each chapter as he would have wished, with something to do and a prayer.

Torrey’s own writings are in the public domain and freely available, and every chapter here names them so the reader can go to the source; several of his books and sermons are in the Ochorus library. This companion is offered only to open the door. It quotes Scripture from the Authorised (King James) Version, and it makes no claim to stand in for the man’s own plain, direct and urgent pages.

A privileged boyhood. Reuben Archer Torrey was born on the twenty-eighth of January, 1856, in Hoboken, New Jersey, into a family of comfortable wealth. He wanted for nothing that money could buy. His mother was a woman of earnest faith who prayed for her son for years, and, by his own later account, hoped that he would one day preach the gospel.
