About this book

This is not a book by F. B. Meyer. It is a companion to him — an independent work of exposition and appreciation, written by Ochorus, that gathers the heart of his teaching into fifteen short chapters for the ordinary reader, with an account of his life, a conclusion, and a guide to his books.

His teaching has a single thread. The believer who has handed the last key of his life to Christ may expect to be led, filled and kept — led by the three witnesses of God’s Word, the Spirit’s prompting and the unfolding of providence; filled with the Spirit not once but again and again; kept in a daily walk of quiet dependence; and sent out, as Meyer himself was sent, to prisoners and drunkards and the poor. Behind it all stands the Lord Jesus as our great High Priest, who has opened the way into the holiest. This volume follows that thread, weighs honestly the places where he must be read with care, and ends each chapter with a few questions and a prayer.

F. B. Meyer’s own writings are in the public domain and freely available, and every chapter here names the book it draws on so that the reader can go to the source. This companion is offered only to open the door to him. Scripture is quoted from the Authorised (King James) Version, and nothing here claims to stand in for his own warm, pictorial and searching pages.

A London boyhood. Frederick Brotherton Meyer was born in Clapham, then on the edge of London, on the eighth of April, 1847. His father was a prosperous City merchant of German descent, and the home was comfortable, cultured and devout.
