About this book
Little Diamond, a coachman's son, sleeps in a hayloft over the horses, and one night the wind that blows through a hole in the boards speaks to him. She is North Wind, a great and beautiful lady who carries him through the night on her errands, some of them kind and some of them terrible, and at last takes him to the strange, quiet country at her back. Home again in the poor streets of London, Diamond drives his father's cab, befriends a crossing-sweeper and a drunken cabman's family, and carries a quiet goodness into every place he goes. MacDonald's tender, mysterious story for children of every age is about suffering, trust and a love that is at work even in the dark.
I have been asked to tell you about the back of the north wind. An old Greek writer mentions a people who lived there, and were so comfortable that they could not bear it any longer, and drowned themselves. My story is not the same as his. I do not think Herodotus had got the right account of the place.
