Cultivating The Spirit Of Prayer

Who is the Spirit of Prayer?

“ Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” Romans 8:26 The spirit of prayer is the Holy Spirit, and He is the one who intercedes on our behalf. Through us, He maintains an atmosphere of prayer in our lives. Everyone should have Him! Whether we notice it or not, He operates powerfully in us, and without Him, nothing can be done perfectly.

We receive and invite Him by desire. We receive Him the same way we received the Lord Jesus Christ in our lives; by faith. You cannot perform an act to get the Holy Spirit, not even the good deeds can make Him come or even fill you. It is by desire and faith.

The Holy Spirit is truly wonderful. If you are thirsty, He will satisfy you. You will find yourself praying continually. He will lead you into His visions, plans, and purposes. He will express Himself through you in prayer, and you will know that He is at work! Everyone needs to have the Spirit of prayer because He is the perfect guide in all things.

One might say: “I have prayed and invited the spirit of prayer to influence my life but I am not seeing any change.” I will respond to this with an example of a m other who wants her children to accept the Lord Jesus and be born again. She is praying for her children to see Jesus so that they can go to church as a whole family. Have you noticed where the problem is coming from? The problem is in the reason/motive for praying. It is a marvelous thing to pray for souls to come to Christ, but if the motive is for personal pleasure, it ceases to be a powerful prayer because it is selfish. “You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”

James 4:3. Our focus should be on eternity. Perhaps this is why someone hasn't seen any change even after praying for the Spirit of prayer. As you pray for your friend, teacher, sister or any other person, always remember to have the right reason for what you are praying for.

How then can we cultivate the Spirit of Prayer? How can we fully benefit from the Holy Spirit? How can we nurture the Spirit of Prayer?

1. By praying at all times in the Spirit, having faith, and letting it be proven that you operate by faith and not by sight. This means that you can call things that are not as though they are. You can command the situation to change because the power is in you. You are stronger than 10,000 armies! Stronger than malaria, ulcers, cancer, hepatitis, fibroids, HIV, sickle cells, tumours, and any other sickness or disease. Praise the Lord! Pray in the Spirit, release mysteries because you have the power to effect changes in your life.

2. We cultivate the Spirit of prayer through meditating on God’s Word. T hrough it, the Holy Spirit can be stirred and can cause us to pray fervently. The more you read the Word, the more you know it, and if you can put to work what you have known, and meditate on it always, you can never be discouraged or disadvantaged. You always grow because you are feeding and acting on the word of God, and that stirs up the Spirit of Prayer. Diseases can’t thrive in such atmospheres, sicknesses can’t, and neither can sorrow, condemnation, or worry!
