Day 10 — Rest
“Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain; unless the LORD protects the city, its watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for bread to eat—for He gives sleep to His beloved.”
— Psalm 127:1–2 (BSB)
It’s past midnight. You should be asleep, but there’s one more episode, one more level, one more message, one more page of notes. In the morning you drag yourself up, tired before the day has begun. Weekends don’t help much: homework, chores, family obligations, and the feeling that if you stop, you’ll fall behind.
We live in an always-on world. And it’s wearing a lot of people out.
Psalm 127 has a surprising thing to say about that. Hard work is good, but if God isn’t in it, all the rushing is “in vain.” You can “rise early and stay up late,” and still miss the point. “He gives sleep to His beloved.”
Sleep is a gift. It’s also an act of trust. When you go to sleep, you stop being in control. The world carries on without you. Messages arrive that you can’t answer. And that’s fine, because the One who “will neither slumber nor sleep” is still awake.
God built rest into the rhythm of the world from the start. After six days of creation, He “rested from all His work.” Then He gave His people the Sabbath, a day each week to stop. Jesus said, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” Rest isn’t a reward for when everything’s done. Everything will never be done. Rest is a gift you receive in faith, trusting that God will hold the world while you stop.
So practise rest. Protect your sleep. Take regular times to stop, to be quiet, to enjoy God and the people you love.
But there’s an even deeper kind of rest, and it’s the one you most need.
Many people are exhausted not just in their bodies but in their souls. They’re trying to be good enough for God, for their families or for themselves, and it never ends. The Bible says that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” No amount of effort can climb that gap. But God didn’t leave us there. Jesus lived the life we couldn’t, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”
That’s why Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” And Hebrews says, “There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work.”
Have you entered that rest? Not your family’s faith or your church’s, but yours? You can, today. Tell God you’ve gone your own way and can’t fix it yourself. Trust that Jesus died for you and rose again. Receive Him as your Saviour and Lord. You could pray something like this, in your own words: Jesus, I’m tired of trying to save myself. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I trust You now. Be my Saviour and my Lord, and give me Your rest.
If you prayed that and meant it, tell a Christian you trust today. And if you’re not ready, keep seeking. His invitation stays open.
Think about it: Where do you most need rest right now: your body, your mind or your soul? What keeps you from receiving it?
Try this: Tonight, charge your phone outside your bedroom, or at least out of reach. Before you sleep, pray: Lord, You’re awake, so I can rest. If you trusted Jesus today, tell a parent, a youth leader or a Christian friend.
Go deeper: The Key Teachings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer — Bonhoeffer noticed how anxious many people are in silence, and how quickly they reach for noise, and he taught that time alone with God, silent and listening to His Word, is something we learn only by practising it. Start with chapter 11, “The Day Alone”.
Lord, I’m often so busy and so tired. Thank You that You never sleep, so I can. Thank You that Jesus has done the work I could never do, and that I can rest in Him. Teach me to stop, to sleep, to be quiet before You, and to trust You with everything I leave undone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
