Day 15 — Make the Most of Your Time
“Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”
— Ephesians 5:15–16 (BSB)
Here’s a fun fact: every single day has exactly 1,440 minutes. Everyone gets the same amount: kids and grown-ups, rich people and poor people, presidents and farmers. Nobody gets more, and nobody gets less.
The question is, how will you use them?
Paul says, “Pay careful attention… to how you walk.” In the Bible, walk often means the way you live. Be careful how you live. Be wise, not foolish. And he says to be “redeeming the time.”
To redeem something means to buy it back or rescue it. Paul is saying: rescue your time! Don’t let it slip away and get wasted. Use it for things that matter.
Time is one of the most valuable gifts God gives us. And unlike money, you can never get it back. Once a minute is gone, it’s gone forever.
What eats up your time? For many kids (and grown-ups!), it’s screens. Videos, games and scrolling can gobble up hours without us even noticing. You sit down to watch “just one video,” and suddenly it’s been two hours! None of those things are bad on their own. But they can steal time from better things.
Here are some ways to redeem your time:
- Start with God. Give Him the first part of your day.
- Do what matters first. Homework and chores before games.
- Set limits on screens. Decide ahead of time how long you’ll play, and stick to it.
- Spend time with people. Real, face-to-face time with family and friends.
- Make things. Build, draw, write, cook, play music or learn a skill.
- Serve someone. Use some of your time to help others.
- Rest well. Remember Day 12! Rest is a good use of time too.
This doesn’t mean you can never have fun. God loves when you enjoy life! It means being wise about how you spend the minutes God gives you.
At the end of each day, you could ask: Did I use today well?
Think about it: What activities take up most of your time? Are there any that you think are stealing time from better things?
Try this: Keep track of how you spend your free time today. At the end of the day, look at your list and ask God to help you use your time wisely.
Dear God, thank You for the gift of time. Help me not to waste it, but to use it wisely. Help me put the most important things first, and spend my minutes on things that matter to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
