Day 9 — Filters and Feeds

“A tranquil heart is life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

— Proverbs 14:30 (BSB)

Have you ever scrolled through pictures and videos and come away feeling worse about yourself? Everyone else seems to be having more fun, going to better places, wearing cuter outfits and looking perfect. And you’re just… sitting on your bed in your pajamas.

Whether you have your own phone yet or not, you’ve probably seen how screens and social media can make girls feel. Here’s something important to know: most of what you see online isn’t the whole story.

People post their best moments, not their boring or hard ones. They take twenty pictures and post the best one. Many photos are edited or filtered to change how people look: smoother skin, different faces, different bodies. Some videos are staged to look spontaneous. What looks like a perfect life is usually a highlight reel.

But even knowing that, it’s easy to feel envy. Envy is when you see what someone else has and you want it, and it makes you unhappy that you don’t have it.

Proverbs describes envy in a pretty gross way: it “rots the bones.” Envy doesn’t just make you sad. It eats away at you from the inside. The more you feed it, the worse you feel.

But look at the other half of the verse: “A tranquil heart is life to the body.” Tranquil means calm and peaceful. A heart that’s content, that trusts God and isn’t constantly comparing, brings life and health.

So how do you guard your heart against envy?

  • Notice how you feel. If scrolling or watching makes you feel jealous or not good enough, that’s a sign to stop.
  • Remember the highlight reel. You’re seeing their best moments, not their whole life.
  • Limit what you look at. It’s okay to unfollow, mute or close the app.
  • Replace envy with thankfulness. Name something you’re grateful for in your own life.
  • Talk to someone. If screens are making you feel bad about yourself, tell a parent. You’re not alone.

And if something online ever makes you uncomfortable or scared, turn it off and tell a trusted adult right away.

Think about it: Have you ever felt worse about yourself after looking at screens? What do you think causes that?

Try this: Take a break from screens for a whole afternoon. Notice how your heart feels afterward.

Dear God, envy is so easy to feel. Help me remember that what I see isn’t the whole story. Give me a tranquil heart that’s content with the life You’ve given me. Help me guard my heart and be thankful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
