Day 8 — The Sister Nobody Noticed

“When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.”

— Genesis 29:31 (BSB)

“And once more she conceived and gave birth to a son and said, ‘This time I will praise the LORD.’ So she named him Judah.”

— Genesis 29:35 (BSB)

Leah and Rachel were sisters. The Bible tells us that Rachel was “shapely and beautiful.” But about Leah, it only says she “had weak eyes.” Rachel was the one everyone noticed. Leah was the one people overlooked.

When a man named Jacob came to live with their family, he fell in love with Rachel right away. Through a trick by the girls’ father, Jacob ended up married to both sisters. But everyone knew Jacob loved Rachel more.

Can you imagine how Leah felt? Always second. Always compared to her beautiful sister. Always wishing someone would love her the way they loved Rachel.

But the Bible says something beautiful: “When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved…” Nobody else seemed to notice Leah’s pain. But God did. He saw her.

Leah had children, and when each one was born, she gave them names that showed what was in her heart. With her first son, she said, “The LORD has seen my affliction. Surely my husband will love me now.” With her second and third, she was still hoping her husband would finally love her.

But when her fourth son was born, something had changed. This time she said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” And she named him Judah, which sounds like the Hebrew word for “praise.”

Leah stopped trying so hard to win the love she didn’t have, and she started praising God for the love she did have.

And here’s the most amazing part: God did something wonderful through Leah’s son Judah. Many years later, King David was born from Judah’s family. And many years after that, Jesus was born from that family too! The sister nobody noticed became part of God’s greatest story.

Maybe you’ve felt like Leah. Maybe there’s a sister, a cousin or a friend who always gets more attention. Maybe you feel overlooked. God sees you. You’re not second place to Him.

Think about it: Have you ever felt like Leah, overlooked or compared to someone else? How does it help to know God saw her, and sees you?

Try this: Leah said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” Write down three things you can praise God for today, even if something in your life feels unfair.

Dear God, thank You that You saw Leah when no one else did, and that You see me too. When I feel overlooked or compared to others, help me turn my heart toward praising You. Thank You that I’m never second place to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
