Day 29 — Finishing Well

“For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but to all who crave His appearing.”

— 2 Timothy 4:6–8 (BSB)

These are some of the last words the apostle Paul ever wrote.

He was an old man, sitting in a cold prison cell in Rome. He knew he would soon be put to death for following Jesus. And he wrote one last letter to his young friend Timothy.

Paul looked back over his life. He had been beaten, stoned, shipwrecked and thrown in prison. He had traveled thousands of miles to tell people about Jesus. He had started churches all over the Roman world. And through it all, he had stayed faithful.

So Paul could say three amazing things:

“I have fought the good fight.” Following Jesus had been a battle, against temptation, against discouragement, against people who opposed him. But he had fought it well.

“I have finished the race.” He hadn’t quit. He had run all the way to the end.

“I have kept the faith.” Through everything, he had kept trusting Jesus.

And Paul wasn’t afraid of the end. He was looking forward to “the crown of righteousness” that Jesus would give him. And notice who else gets that crown: “not only to me, but to all who crave His appearing.” That means everyone who loves Jesus and longs for Him to come back. That includes you!

Here’s something important: it’s not enough to start well. Lots of people start following Jesus with excitement and then drift away. What matters is finishing well.

You’re young, and the finish line is probably a long way off. But the choices you make now start building the habits of a lifetime. Every day you choose to follow Jesus is a step toward finishing well.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if, at the end of your life, you could say what Paul said? I fought the good fight. I finished the race. I kept the faith.

You can. Not because you’re strong, but because Jesus is faithful, and He will help you all the way to the end.

Think about it: What do you think it takes to “finish well” as a follower of Jesus? What could help you keep going for your whole life?

Try this: Ask an older Christian you admire, maybe a grandparent or someone at church, “What has helped you keep following Jesus for so long?” Write down what they say.

Dear God, I want to finish well. Help me fight the good fight, finish the race and keep the faith, for my whole life. Thank You that You will help me all the way to the end. I look forward to the day I see Jesus. In His name, Amen.
