Day 29 — Nothing Can Separate Us
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
— Romans 8:38–39 (BSB)
What’s the scariest thing you can imagine? Now here’s the good news: it can’t separate you from God’s love.
Paul wrote these words to Christians in Rome. Some of them would soon face terrible persecution for following Jesus. Paul himself had been beaten, shipwrecked, thrown in prison and chased from town to town. He knew about hard times. And he asked a question: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?” (Romans 8:35).
Then he answered with one of the most powerful lists in the Bible. Look at all the things that cannot separate you from God’s love:
- Death or life. Nothing in life, and not even death itself.
- Angels or principalities. No spiritual power, not even the devil.
- The present or the future. Nothing happening right now, and nothing that could ever happen.
- Any powers. No person, government or force in the world.
- Height or depth. Nothing up high or down low.
- Anything else in all creation. In case Paul missed anything, this covers it!
Paul said he was “convinced.” He was absolutely sure.
Think about all the storms we’ve talked about this month: fear, worry, sadness, death, hard things at home, temptation, unfair treatment, weakness. Not one of them can separate you from God’s love. Not a bad grade. Not a mistake you made. Not a bully. Not a sickness. Not moving to a new place. Nothing.
A few verses earlier, Paul wrote, “in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). Not because we’re strong, but because of Him who loves us.
The storm might rage. The waves might crash. But the love of God that is in Christ Jesus is like an unbreakable rope that holds you tight. And it will never, ever let you go.
Think about it: What’s something you’ve worried might separate you from God’s love? What does this verse say about it?
Try this: Write Romans 8:38–39 on a card, and add your own “neither…nor…” to the list, like “neither a bad day nor my mistakes.” Keep it somewhere you’ll see it often.
Dear God, thank You that nothing in all creation can separate me from Your love. Not death, not life, not the present or the future, not anything. When storms come, help me remember that Your love holds me tight and will never let me go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
