Day 21 — Work as for the Lord

“Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, as for the Lord and not for men, because you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as your reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

— Colossians 3:23–24 (BSB)

Let’s be honest: nobody jumps out of bed excited to clean the bathroom. Or do long division. Or practice scales on the piano for the hundredth time.

Some work is fun. A lot of work isn’t. So how can we do the boring, hard or unnoticed jobs well?

Paul gives us an amazing secret: “Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, as for the Lord and not for men.”

Paul first wrote these words to people who did some of the hardest, least appreciated work there was. Their bosses might never thank them. But Paul told them to imagine they weren’t working for their earthly boss at all. They were working for Jesus!

Try that with your own work. When you’re folding laundry, imagine you’re folding Jesus’ clothes. When you’re doing homework, imagine you’re handing it in to Jesus. When you’re practicing a sport, imagine Jesus is your coach, cheering you on.

Suddenly, even small jobs matter. Nothing is boring when you’re doing it for the King.

Working “with your whole being” means giving your best effort, not doing just enough to get by. It means doing the job right even when nobody’s checking. It means not cutting corners or rushing through so you can get back to your game.

This doesn’t mean you have to be perfect or be the best at everything. Jesus doesn’t expect you to be the top student or the star athlete. He just wants your honest best, done for Him.

And look at the reward: “you will receive an inheritance from the Lord.” People might not notice your hard work. Your teacher might not see how long you studied. Your parents might not notice you cleaned under the bed. But Jesus notices. And He promises that nothing done for Him is ever wasted.

“It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” That changes everything.

Think about it: What job or task do you most dislike? How might it change if you did it “for the Lord”?

Try this: Choose one chore or assignment today and do it with your whole heart, as if Jesus Himself were going to see it. Do it without being asked or reminded.

Dear Jesus, help me remember that whatever I do, I’m really doing it for You. Help me work hard and give my best, even on boring jobs and even when nobody notices. Thank You that You see everything I do for You. In Your name, Amen.
