Day 18 — Quick to Listen

“My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”

— James 1:19 (BSB)

Someone once pointed out that God gave us two ears and only one mouth. Maybe that’s a hint that we should listen twice as much as we talk!

James gives us three simple instructions that could change almost every conversation you have:

Be quick to listen. Really listening means more than waiting for your turn to talk. It means paying attention, looking at the person, and trying to understand what they’re saying and how they feel. Have you ever been talking to someone who kept looking at their phone? It doesn’t feel good. Listening well tells people, You matter to me.

Be slow to speak. That doesn’t mean never talk. It means think before you speak. Don’t interrupt. Don’t jump in with the first thing that pops into your head. Sometimes the wisest thing to say is nothing at all.

Be slow to anger. When you listen first and think before you speak, you’re much less likely to get angry. A lot of fights happen because someone didn’t listen, jumped to conclusions and blew up. If you slow down and listen, you might discover you misunderstood!

Think about what happens in an argument. Usually both people are talking and nobody is listening. Each person just gets louder. But if one person stops and says, “Wait, tell me what you mean,” everything can change.

Listening is also a way of loving people. When you listen to a friend who’s sad, you don’t always have to fix their problem. Sometimes just being heard is what they need most.

And listening matters with God too. Prayer isn’t only talking to God. It’s also being quiet and listening, especially as you read His Word. Samuel, when he was a boy, prayed, “Speak, for Your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). That’s a great prayer for anyone.

Think about it: Are you usually a better talker or a better listener? Who in your life is a really good listener?

Try this: In every conversation today, try to listen more than you talk. Ask at least one follow-up question, like “What happened next?” or “How did that make you feel?”

Dear God, help me be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger. Help me really listen to the people around me, so they know they matter. And help me listen to You too. Speak, Lord, for I’m listening. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
