Day 15 — Words That Build
“Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen.”
— Ephesians 4:29 (BSB)
Have you ever watched a building get knocked down? A huge wrecking ball swings on a chain, and boom! A wall that took weeks to build crumbles in seconds. Tearing down is fast and easy. Building up is slow and takes work.
Words can be like a wrecking ball or like a builder’s tools. Paul says to use your words for “building up.”
First, Paul says, “Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths.” Unwholesome means rotten, like spoiled fruit or moldy bread. Rotten words are words that tear people down: insults, put-downs, mean jokes, swearing, making fun of people. Sometimes people say, “I was just joking!” But if a joke makes someone feel small, it’s still a wrecking ball.
Instead, Paul says to speak “only what is helpful for building up the one in need.” Building words make people stronger. They’re like bricks you add to someone’s wall. For example:
- “You did a great job on that.”
- “I’m glad you’re my friend.”
- “Don’t worry, you’ll get it next time.”
- “Can I help?”
- “I’m praying for you.”
Notice the words “the one in need.” Good builders look around and ask: Who needs to be built up today? Maybe a friend who’s discouraged. Maybe your mom or dad after a long day. Maybe the kid who always gets picked last.
And look at the last part: “bringing grace to those who listen.” Grace is a gift you don’t deserve. Your words can be a gift to someone, giving them kindness they didn’t expect.
This matters online too. It’s easy to type something mean in a comment or a group chat, because you can’t see the other person’s face. But there’s a real person on the other side of the screen, made in God’s image.
Think about it: When was the last time someone built you up with their words? How did it make you feel?
Try this: Give at least three “building” words today, to three different people. Make them specific and true.
Dear God, forgive me for the times I’ve used my words like a wrecking ball. Help me speak only words that build people up. Show me who needs encouragement today, and give me the right words to say. Let my words be a gift of grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
