Day 9 — Gentleness
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
— Proverbs 15:1 (BSB)
Sofia’s brother barged into her room and yelled, “You took my charger AGAIN!” Sofia felt her face get hot. She was ready to yell right back: “I did NOT! Get out of my room!” That would have turned into a screaming match in about three seconds.
But Sofia took a breath and said, “I don’t think I did. But I’ll help you look for it.” Her brother paused. “Oh. Okay.” Two minutes later, they found it under the couch.
Proverbs 15:1 is like a rule of physics for arguments. “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Harsh words are like throwing gasoline on a fire. Gentle words are like pouring water on it.
That’s gentleness. It means being calm, soft and careful with people instead of rough, loud and pushy. Gentle doesn’t mean weak! It actually takes a lot of strength to stay gentle when someone is yelling at you. Jesus was the strongest person who ever lived, and He described Himself as “gentle and humble in heart” (Matthew 11:29).
The Bible gives a great example in the book of Judges. After Gideon won a big battle, the men of Ephraim stormed up to him, furious. “Why didn’t you call us to fight with you?” Gideon could have argued back. Instead, he answered gently and praised them for what they had done. And the Bible says that when he said this, their anger calmed down (Judges 8:1–3).
Gentleness also shows up in how we treat people. It’s being careful with a younger kid. It’s speaking softly to someone who is sad. It’s correcting a friend kindly instead of making them feel stupid.
You can’t always control what other people say to you. But with God’s help, you can choose how you answer.
Think about it: Think about the last argument you had. How might it have gone differently if you had given a gentle answer?
Try this: Next time someone says something harsh to you, try the “Sofia test.” Take a breath and give a gentle answer. See what happens.
Dear Jesus, You are gentle and humble in heart. When people are rough with me, help me not to be rough back. Give me gentle words that turn away anger. Grow the fruit of gentleness in me. In Your name, Amen.
