Day 29 — Sing to the Lord
“Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout to the Rock of our salvation! Let us enter His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him in song. For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods.”
— Psalm 95:1–3 (BSB)
What happens when your favorite team scores the winning goal? People jump up, cheer, clap and shout! Nobody has to tell them to. When something is truly great, celebrating comes naturally.
That’s what worship is: celebrating how great God is. Psalm 95 invites us: “Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD!” Look at the words: sing, shout, joy, joyful noise. Worship isn’t meant to be boring!
Why should we worship God? The psalm tells us: “For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods.” Think back over everything you’ve learned in this book. God made the whole universe. He names every star. He is holy, holy, holy. He loved us first and sent Jesus to rescue us. He forgives us, adopts us, never leaves us and hears every prayer. That’s a God worth singing about!
The psalm also calls God “the Rock of our salvation.” A rock is solid and strong. You can stand on it without it moving. God is the one who saved us, and He’s the one we can stand on.
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a great singer to worship God. “Make a joyful noise” means God cares more about your heart than your voice. A kid singing off-key with a heart full of love for God is making beautiful music to Him.
And worship isn’t only singing. You can worship God by praying, by giving thanks, by obeying Him and by using your talents for Him. You can even worship Him by doing your homework or chores with a good attitude, because you’re doing it for Him. Your whole life can be a song of worship.
But singing is a special gift. When God’s people sing together, it’s like a little preview of heaven.
Think about it: What is one thing about God that makes you want to celebrate Him?
Try this: Sing a worship song today, out loud. Or make up your own song to God about something He has done for you.
Dear God, You are a great God and a great King! You are the Rock of my salvation. I want to sing for joy to You. Thank You for everything You have done for me. Let my whole life be a song of worship to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
