Day 27 — Don’t Just Listen — Do

“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves. For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.”

— James 1:22–24 (BSB)

Imagine you look in the mirror before school and notice a big piece of spinach stuck in your teeth. Would you just walk away and forget about it? Of course not! The whole point of looking in the mirror is to fix what you see.

James says the Bible is like a mirror. When we read it, it shows us what we’re really like and what God wants us to do. But if we read it, nod our heads and then walk away without changing anything, it’s like seeing that spinach and leaving it there all day.

Over the last 26 days, you’ve learned a lot. You’ve learned that God is holy and loving. You’ve learned the good news about Jesus. You’ve learned who you are in Christ, how to pray and why the Bible matters. That’s great! But James says knowing isn’t enough. God wants us to do what we learn.

James even says that if you only listen, “you are deceiving yourselves.” You could fool yourself into thinking you’re growing just because you know a lot of Bible facts. But real growth shows up in how you live.

Jesus told a story about this too. He said the person who hears His words and does them is like a wise builder who builds a house on solid rock. When the storm comes, the house stands.

Doing God’s Word isn’t always easy. It might mean forgiving someone who hurt you, telling the truth when a lie would be easier, helping out at home without complaining, or being kind to someone nobody likes. But every time you obey, your roots grow a little deeper.

You don’t have to do it all at once. Just start with one thing.

Think about it: Of everything you’ve learned in this book, what is one thing you know God wants you to do but you haven’t done yet?

Try this: Choose one thing from these 27 days and do it today. Then tell someone what you did.

Dear God, I don’t just want to know about You. I want to obey You. Help me be a doer of Your Word, not just a hearer. Show me one thing to do today, and give me the courage to do it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
