Day 18 — The Helper Inside

“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.”

— John 14:16–17 (BSB)

It was the night before Jesus died on the cross. He was eating supper with His disciples, and He told them something that made them very sad: He was going away. They had followed Him for three years. How could they keep going without Him?

But Jesus made them an amazing promise. He would ask the Father to send “another Advocate.” An advocate is someone who stands beside you to help you, like a coach, a guide or someone who speaks up for you. Jesus was talking about the Holy Spirit.

Here are some important things to know about the Holy Spirit:

He is a person, not a force. The Holy Spirit isn’t a feeling or a mysterious power. He is God, just like the Father and the Son. Jesus calls Him “Him,” not “it.”

He lives inside everyone who trusts Jesus. Look at those last words: “He abides with you and will be in you.” When the disciples had Jesus, He was with them. But the Spirit would be in them. That’s even closer!

He helps you understand the Bible. A few verses later, Jesus said the Spirit “will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you” (John 14:26). When a verse suddenly makes sense, or comes to mind right when you need it, that’s the Spirit at work.

He gives you power to obey. Remember the fruit we’ll talk about in Book 3, like love, joy, peace and self-control? The Spirit grows those in you. You don’t have to be good in your own strength.

He comforts you. When you’re sad or scared, the Spirit is right there with you.

You can’t see the Holy Spirit, just like you can’t see the wind. But you can see what He does. And if you belong to Jesus, you are never without Him.

Think about it: Which of the things the Holy Spirit does are you most thankful for today?

Try this: Before you read your Bible or pray today, ask: “Holy Spirit, please help me understand and obey.”

Dear God, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to live in everyone who trusts Jesus. Holy Spirit, thank You for being my helper. Please teach me the truth, remind me of God’s Word, give me strength to obey and comfort me when I’m sad. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
