Day 10 — The Cross

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

— John 3:16 (BSB)

“But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

— Romans 5:8 (BSB)

Imagine you’re playing baseball in the backyard. You swing hard, crack!, and the ball flies straight through your neighbor’s big front window. Glass everywhere. The window costs more money than you have ever seen. There’s no way you could ever pay for it.

Then your dad walks over, knocks on the neighbor’s door and says, “I’ll pay for it. All of it.” You didn’t earn that. You didn’t deserve it. He did it because he loves you.

That’s a small picture of something much bigger.

On Day 7 we learned that everyone has sinned. We’ve all done, said and thought things that go against God. And sin isn’t like a broken window. It’s much more serious, because it breaks our friendship with God. The Bible says the result of sin is death: being separated from God forever. That’s what “perish” means in John 3:16. It’s a debt none of us could ever pay.

But look at what God did. He “gave His one and only Son.” Jesus, who never sinned even once, came to earth and died on a cross. When He died, He took the punishment for our sin, the punishment we deserved. He paid a debt He didn’t owe, because we owed a debt we couldn’t pay.

Now read Romans 5:8 again: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God didn’t wait for us to clean up our act first. He didn’t say, “Be good for a while and then I’ll love you.” He loved us at our worst. The cross is the proof.

And John 3:16 tells us what we get instead of perishing: eternal life. That means forgiveness now, friendship with God every day and a forever home with Him. How do we receive it? “Everyone who believes in Him.” It isn’t earned; it’s trusted.

So the next time you see a cross, on a church, a necklace or a picture, remember: it isn’t just a decoration. It’s the biggest “I love you” ever said.

Think about it: Romans 5:8 says Jesus died for us “while we were still sinners.” Why do you think that matters so much?

Try this: Try to say John 3:16 from memory. Then put your own name in it: “For God so loved [your name]…”

Dear God, thank You for loving me so much that You gave Jesus. Thank You that He took the punishment for my sin on the cross, even though He never did anything wrong. I could never pay for my sin, but Jesus paid it all. Help me believe in Him and live every day thankful for what He did. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
