Day 14 — Priscilla Makes Room

“And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.”

— Acts 18:26 (BSB)

Priscilla and her husband, Aquila, were tentmakers. When Paul came to the city of Corinth, he needed a place to stay and a way to earn money. So he moved in with Priscilla and Aquila, and they all made tents together!

Priscilla and Aquila became some of Paul’s closest friends and helpers. They traveled with him. They opened their home for a church to meet there. Paul even said they had “risked their lives” for him (Romans 16:4).

One day, in the city of Ephesus, a young preacher named Apollos came to town. Apollos was a brilliant speaker who knew the Scriptures really well. He talked about Jesus boldly. But there was something important he didn’t know yet. He only knew part of the story.

Priscilla and Aquila could have criticized him in front of everyone. They could have said, “He’s getting it wrong!” But they didn’t. Instead, “they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.”

They invited him in. They talked with him privately and kindly. And they helped him understand.

Because of their kindness, Apollos became an even more powerful preacher who helped many people believe in Jesus.

Priscilla shows us three beautiful ways to serve.

She opened her home. She made room for Paul, and later for a whole church. Hospitality is a way of serving: making people feel welcome, safe and at home.

She knew God’s Word. She had learned so much that she could help explain it to someone else. You can learn God’s Word too, and share it with others.

She helped gently. She didn’t embarrass Apollos. She helped him privately and with kindness.

You can serve like Priscilla. Invite a lonely girl over (with your parents’ permission). Help a friend understand something she’s confused about. Be gentle when someone makes a mistake.

Think about it: Why do you think Priscilla and Aquila took Apollos aside instead of correcting him in public?

Try this: Make room for someone today. Save a seat, invite a friend over or gently help someone who’s confused.

Dear God, thank You for Priscilla, who opened her home and helped others know You better. Help me make room for people, learn Your Word, and help others gently and kindly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
