Day 25 — Hannah Pours Out Her Heart
“‘No, my lord,’ Hannah replied. ‘I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD.’”
— 1 Samuel 1:15 (BSB)
Hannah wanted a baby more than anything. But year after year, no baby came. To make it worse, another woman in her household had lots of children, and she teased Hannah about it over and over. Hannah was so sad that she cried and couldn’t eat.
One year, when her family went to the house of God, Hannah slipped away to pray. And she prayed with her whole heart. She was so upset that her lips moved, but no sound came out. She wept and wept.
The priest, Eli, was watching her. He saw her lips moving without any sound, and he thought she was drunk! He scolded her.
But Hannah answered, “No, my lord. I am a woman troubled in spirit… I have poured out my soul before the LORD.”
Picture pouring water out of a pitcher. You tip it over, and everything inside comes out, all of it. That’s how Hannah prayed. She didn’t hold anything back. She told God exactly how she felt: her sadness, her hurt, her longing.
And after she prayed, something changed. The Bible says she went on her way, ate something and “her face was no longer downcast.” She hadn’t gotten her answer yet. But she had given her burden to God, and He gave her peace.
And God did answer. Hannah had a baby boy, and she named him Samuel, which sounds like the Hebrew for “heard by God.” Samuel grew up to be one of Israel’s greatest prophets.
Some girls feel like they have to act fine all the time. Put on a smile. Pretend everything’s okay. Maybe you feel like your feelings are “too much.” But Hannah teaches us that we can be completely honest with God. You can pour out your soul to Him: your tears, your fears, your anger and your hopes. He can handle it, and He cares.
Hannah shows us that prayer isn’t about using the right words. It’s about bringing your real heart to a God who listens.
Think about it: Is there something heavy on your heart that you haven’t fully “poured out” to God?
Try this: Find a quiet place today and pour out your heart to God, out loud or in your journal. Tell Him everything, and don’t hold back.
Dear God, thank You that I can pour out my heart to You, just like Hannah did. I don’t have to pretend with You. Here’s what’s on my heart: [tell Him]. Thank You for listening and for giving me peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
