Day 21 — Abigail the Peacemaker
“Then David said to Abigail, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who sent you to meet me this day! Blessed is your discernment, and blessed are you, because today you kept me from bloodshed and from avenging myself by my own hand.’”
— 1 Samuel 25:32–33 (BSB)
Before David became king, he and his men lived in the wilderness, hiding from King Saul. While they were there, they protected the shepherds and flocks of a very rich man named Nabal. They made sure no robbers or wild animals attacked them.
When it was time for Nabal’s sheep to be sheared, which was a time of celebration, David sent some of his men to politely ask Nabal for some food.
But Nabal was rude and foolish. He insulted David and sent his men away with nothing.
When David heard, he was furious. He grabbed his sword and set out with four hundred men to take revenge on Nabal and his whole household!
Meanwhile, one of Nabal’s servants ran to tell Nabal’s wife, Abigail. The Bible says she was “an intelligent and beautiful woman,” but her husband was “harsh and evil.”
Abigail didn’t panic. She acted fast. She gathered loads of bread, wine, meat, raisins and figs, loaded them on donkeys and rode out to meet David, without telling her husband.
When she saw David coming, she got off her donkey, bowed low and spoke to him humbly and wisely. She apologized for her husband’s rudeness. She reminded David that God had great plans for him, and that one day he’d be glad he hadn’t taken revenge.
And David listened! He said, “Blessed is your discernment.” Discernment means wisdom to see what’s right. David thanked God for sending Abigail, because she had kept him from doing something terrible.
Abigail was brave, but not in the way you might expect. She didn’t fight. She made peace. She used gentle, wise words to calm an angry man and stop a disaster.
That’s a kind of courage the world needs. When friends are fighting, when someone’s angry, when a situation is about to explode, a girl with wisdom and gentle words can make all the difference.
Think about it: What made Abigail brave? How is being a peacemaker a kind of courage?
Try this: If you see an argument starting today, try to be an “Abigail.” Use calm, wise words to help make peace.
Dear God, thank You for Abigail’s wisdom and courage. Give me discernment to know what’s right, and gentle words to help make peace. Use me to calm angry situations and help people make good choices. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
