A Knock at the Door

“Give us today our daily bread.” — from Matthew 6

One Sunday, George and his wife were down to their very last few pennies. There was barely enough bread in the house for that one day, and no money to buy more for the evening.

So George prayed. He didn’t pray a fancy prayer. He asked God, very simply, to send them some bread for that evening — real bread, for their table, that very day.

And here is what happened. While George was still praying — before he had even finished — there was a knock at the door!

A poor woman was standing there. She had brought some of her own dinner to share, and a little money from another poor friend. And later that same afternoon, she came back again, this time carrying a big loaf of bread.

God had heard. In fact, God had sent that woman on her way with the bread before George had finished asking. The answer was already coming while he was still on his knees.

When Jesus taught us to pray, he told us to ask for our “daily bread” — the things we need each day. George took that seriously, and God took care of him. You can ask God for the ordinary things you need too. He cares about all of it, even bread for supper.

Dear God, thank you that you care about even the small, everyday things. Please give me what I need today. Amen.
