Open Your Mouth Wide

“Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.” — from Psalm 81

One day George read about a man long ago who had built a home for orphans — children with no mother or father — just by trusting God. And a big idea began to grow in George’s heart. What if he started a home for orphans too?

George prayed and prayed about it. He even asked God to take the idea away if it wasn’t from him. Then, reading his Bible, he found these words: “Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.” It was as if God were saying, “Ask me for big things, George. I can do them.”

So George asked God for three big things: a house for the children, a large sum of money, and kind people to look after them.

Then he waited to see what God would do. The very first gift was one single shilling — one small coin. The next day, someone sent a big wardrobe. Then a woman offered to come and help. Then a husband and wife offered to look after the children without being paid at all.

Little by little, God filled every need. And one spring day the orphan home opened its doors — with seventeen children living in it!

George didn’t do all this to look clever. He did it so that everyone could see, with their own eyes, that God is real, and God still hears prayer.

Dear God, you are big enough for anything. Help me to bring you my biggest hopes, and to trust you with them. Amen.
