Trusting God with the Baby

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”Psalm 56:3

One Sunday morning, Amanda wanted very much to go and hear a certain preacher across the city. She gave her baby, Will, his bath and laid him gently in his cradle. Then she asked her older daughter, Mazie, to watch him. “If he cries,” she said, “do not pick him up; just rock him.”

Off she went to church. But as the preacher spoke, a frightening feeling swept over her. She was sure she could hear her baby screaming far away. A voice whispered, “Mazie has dropped him! Something terrible has happened! Run home right now!”

Amanda’s heart pounded. She almost jumped up to race home. But then she remembered — she had told other people to trust God. Could she not trust Him herself?

“I will trust the Lord,” she said quietly, “even with my baby.” Again the scary thoughts came, and again she answered, “I said I would trust the Lord, and I will.” So she stayed, and she listened, and God filled her heart with wonderful peace.

When Amanda finally hurried home and opened the door, she found little Will sleeping sweetly in his cradle. He had never even woken up. He was perfectly safe.

Sometimes our minds fill up with scary “what ifs.” When you feel afraid, you can do what Amanda did: give the worry to God and trust Him. He loves you, and He is always taking care of you.

Dear God, when I feel scared, help me to remember that You are near. I give You my worries, because I know You take good care of me. Amen.
