The Cart That Would Not Go

“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” — Psalm 91:11

Amanda travelled even farther, all the way to the faraway land of India, to tell people about Jesus. One night she and her friend Miss Frow were riding along a rough country road in a cart pulled by big, slow oxen called bullocks.

It was very, very dark. There were no streetlights and no moon to help them see the way ahead.

Suddenly, the bullocks stopped. They simply would not take another step. The driver told them to go on, but the animals refused. Amanda and her friend grew frustrated. “Why won’t this cart move?” they wondered.

At last they climbed down to see for themselves. They walked just a few steps ahead into the darkness — and their hearts nearly stopped. Right in front of them was a deep, dangerous ditch cut across the whole road! If the bullocks had walked on, the cart would have crashed, and everyone might have been badly hurt.

How they praised God then! Those stubborn animals had not been stubborn at all. God had used them to stop the cart and keep His travellers safe from danger they could not even see.

Sometimes God protects you in ways you do not notice, and sometimes a “no” or a delay is really Him keeping you safe. You can trust that He is watching over every one of your ways.

Dear God, thank You for watching over me, even when I cannot see the danger. Help me to trust that You are always keeping me safe. Amen.
