The Stolen Trunk
“He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.” — Proverbs 16:32
God led Amanda on another long journey — this time by ship all the way to Africa. Her clothes and her belongings were packed carefully in her trunk down in the bottom of the ship.
But while the ship was loading, some men broke the lock on her trunk and stole many of her things — even her shoes. When Amanda found out, she was very sorry to lose them. Some of those things she never got back at all.
Now, everyone expected her to shout and stamp and lose her temper. Even the captain of the ship watched, amazed, and said, “Mrs. Smith, I do not see how you keep your temper!”
Amanda smiled and answered, “Captain, I am sorry to lose my things. But if losing my temper and getting angry would bring them back, then you would surely see me carry on! Since it would not bring them back, why should I?” And God kept her heart quiet and calm.
When something is stolen or broken or unfair, it is easy to explode in anger. But being angry does not fix things — it only makes us feel worse. God can help you stay calm and gentle, even when something goes wrong. That is real strength.
Dear God, when things go wrong and I feel angry, help me to stay calm like Amanda. Rule my heart with Your peace. Amen.
