"You Shall Not Die"
“I shall not die, but live, and tell what the Lord has done.” — from Psalm 118
While training to be a doctor in London, Hudson was very poor and often lived on just brown bread and water. One evening a needle pricked his finger, and he thought nothing of it. But the next day, while he was helping with a difficult and dangerous medical job, that little cut let in a serious sickness, and Hudson grew terribly ill.
The senior doctor looked at him gravely and said, “You are a dead man.”
What do you think Hudson’s first thought was? It was not fear for himself. It was sadness that now he might never get to China! But then a deep, calm certainty settled over his heart: “I have work to do in China, and I shall not die.”
He had no money for a carriage, so weak as he was, he made his slow way home by bus and on foot. Two other men who got the same sickness at the same time both died. But Hudson lived. God had kept him — because God still had work for him to do far away in China.
God has a plan for your life, and he will take care of you until it is finished. You are safe in his hands.
Dear God, thank you that my life is in your hands and you have good plans for me. Help me trust you, whatever comes. Amen.
