Spring in the Heart

“You take care of the earth and water it. You bless the little plants that grow.” — from Psalm 65

Winter is cold, and the ground looks brown and bare and empty. Nothing seems to be happening at all.

But then spring comes. And one day, if you look very closely, you will see it — a tiny green shoot, pushing up through the cold, hard soil. It is ever so small. You could almost step on it without noticing. But it is alive! And that tiny green shoot is the very beginning of a whole field of wheat.

When you first start to love God, it can be small like that. Maybe you say a little prayer. Maybe you want to be good. Maybe you believe in Jesus just a little bit. It might feel too small to matter.

But it matters so much! God sees that tiny green shoot in your heart, and it makes him very happy. A farmer doesn’t stamp on a little shoot because it isn’t a big plant yet — he takes care of it and waters it and helps it grow. That is exactly what God does with you.

So never think your love for God is too small to count. The biggest, tallest wheat in the whole field started as one tiny green shoot. Keep turning toward God, like a little plant turning to the sun, and he will help you grow.

Dear God, thank you that even my smallest love for you matters. Please help it grow bigger and stronger. Amen.
