Day 3 — God Looks at the Heart

“But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.’”

— 1 Samuel 16:7 (BSB)

God sent the prophet Samuel on a secret mission. He was to go to Bethlehem, to the house of a man named Jesse, and anoint one of Jesse’s sons as the next king of Israel. God would show him which one.

When Jesse’s oldest son, Eliab, walked in, Samuel was sure this was him. Eliab was tall and handsome. He looked like a king! This must be the one, Samuel thought.

But God said no. “Do not consider his appearance or height.” Then God explained why: “Man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.”

One by one, seven of Jesse’s sons walked past Samuel. And each time, God said, “Not this one.” Finally Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?” Jesse replied, “There is still the youngest, but he is tending the sheep.” He hadn’t even bothered to invite him!

When the youngest son came in from the fields, God said, “Rise and anoint him, for he is the one.” His name was David. He was just a shepherd boy, and nobody thought he was important. But God had looked at his heart.

People look at the outside. It’s natural. We notice clothes, hair, faces and bodies. And sometimes people judge us by what they see. Maybe you’ve felt judged for how you look, or maybe you’ve judged someone else.

But God looks deeper. He sees what’s inside you: your kindness, your faith, your honesty and your love. He also sees the hurt, the fear and the parts you hide. And He loves you all the way through.

This doesn’t mean it’s wrong to take care of how you look. It’s fine to enjoy clothes and fixing your hair! But how you look isn’t what makes you valuable, and it isn’t what God cares about most.

So the next time you stand in front of a mirror and feel like you don’t measure up, remember: the mirror only shows the outside. God sees your heart. And that’s what He treasures.

Think about it: Why do you think people pay so much attention to how others look? How can you start seeing people the way God does?

Try this: Today, when you look in the mirror, instead of thinking about how you look, ask God, “What do You see in my heart today?”

Dear God, thank You that You look at my heart, not just my outside. Help me care most about what You care about. Help me stop judging myself and others by appearance, and start seeing hearts the way You do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
